We seem to know a lot about Abraham but do we really? The Scripture speaks of him as the father of the faithful. But what about his blunders? His mighty blunders? God had promised him that he would father a child by Sarah and he would become a father of a great nation. But beyond that, he would be the father of a multitude of nations. All the promises of God yet what did he do? He placed his wife Sarah to be placed in a position of an Egyptian harem! This wasn't a one time sin. He did it a again!! It took a Philistine, an outsider that rebuked him for his mistreatment of his wife. Abraham created a mess spiritually!
We turn to Heb. 11 and call it the "hall of faith" chapter. Abraham is listed in this. It's all true and wonderful. But have you ever wondered why the Lord left out all the messy details about Samson, David, Jacob, Gideon and many others? Their faith was intact and genuine and it was genuine despite the fact that they stumbled and severely failed, some even into old age. They all created some very messy spiritual situations for themselves. We think of David and his horrid failures yet if you were to ask a ruler of Israel about their faithfulness of their ruler ship, the answer depended on if they clung to God as their father David had!
Step up to the mirror. See who is looking back at you. You might wince but if you are honest in heart you would admit that there is some serious fine tuning that needs to be done. We are reminded of our failures yet here we are standing in fellowship with our loving Creator and Redeemer, who is working on bringing us home. The Lord called us to Himself and as long as we hold to our faith in Him, trying with an humble heart, He promises to finish in us what He began! What does that mean? There is coming a day when there will be no more messy details in our lives because of God's grace combined with our faith.
